Winter & snow
From December to March the mainland has reliable snow above 1,600 metres, empty slopes on weekdays, thermal springs, and stone villages with fires lit — an hour or two from an airport.

About Winter & snow
No one is claiming the Alps. The lifts are older, the vertical is smaller and the ski schools are less polished. What Greece offers instead is a mountain holiday where the village, the food and the fire matter as much as the runs, at a scale that suits families and mixed-ability groups.
Parnassos is the largest and the smartest, twenty-odd runs above Delphi with Arachova below it — a stone town that becomes the Greek Cortina at weekends. Kaimaktsalan is the highest, at 2,480 metres on the northern border. Vasilitsa in the Pindus has black-pine tree skiing and, on a Tuesday, nobody.
The non-skiing winter is arguably better: Zagori under frost with empty paths, Pozar's steaming thermal pools in a snowbound gorge, Prespa's lakes in the cold, and Athens museums with no queue. For anyone in Malta who never gets a winter, this is the closest one.
