Athens stopped being a place people rushed through some years ago. Give it two or three nights and it repays them — and there are islands with no cars an hour from the harbour.

The character of the place
The Acropolis Museum, the National Archaeological Museum and the Benaki are three of the best museums in Europe, and Athens now has the restaurants and the small hotels to justify staying. The neighbourhoods to know are Koukaki, Pangrati and Petralona; the rooftop bars everyone photographs are in Monastiraki, and the food is better one street back.
Below the city, the Apollo Coast runs south to Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon — a forty-minute drive that ends with a Doric temple on a headland at sunset.
Hydra is the one to plan around. No cars, no scooters — mules and boats only — and a stone harbour of eighteenth-century merchant mansions. It is an hour and a half from Piraeus and feels an era away.
