The Dodecanese
The Knights of St John held Rhodes for two centuries before Malta. Then the Ottomans, then Italy until 1947. Nowhere in Greece wears its history in more visible strata — and for a Maltese traveller, the Knights' thread runs straight home.
The character of the place
Rhodes Old Town is the largest inhabited medieval city in Europe: the Street of the Knights, the Palace of the Grand Master, and an Ottoman and Jewish quarter behind them. Anyone who knows Valletta will recognise the grammar immediately — and the Knights' auberges are arranged by langue there too.
Symi is the counterpoint: a single harbour of ochre and rose neoclassical houses, built on sponge money, reached by boat. Patmos is monastic and quietly grand, with a fortified monastery over a whitewashed Chora that has been an intellectual centre for nine hundred years.
Karpathos, in the far south, still has a mountain village — Olymbos — where older women wear the local dress daily and the dialect preserves ancient Doric forms. Nisyros is an active volcano you can walk into.

Faliraki, and the mass day-trip boat to Symi. Go independently and stay the night.
